This year I was lucky. With all of the pandemic I was still able to get out and be able to go on vacation. We were really not sure it was going to be possible with the pandemic going on. I used to think the fact that I had a stoma was going to be the reason that would keep me from being on vacation but that has turned out to be a false reason to not go on vacation. Instead I have taken the ostomy as being a reason to go on vacation. To show people that you can go and do some crazy things when you have a stoma and that you shouldn't be held back by it in any way. That is the life I have tried to create and that is the way I like to vacation.
So this year I was lucky in being able to go with my family and hang out at the beach. All the camps opened up in the state we like to visit and I was able to take some time off and relax while social distancing with my family. Now I don't social distance with my family but when it comes to other I most definitely follow the state and local regulations to the tee. I can only say that safety is important to me and even though I am not keen on wearing a mask I wont make anyone uncomfortable by not waring one when it is in public and not outside. The fact that I have a stoma and covid-19 is still going strong is not really a reason for me to stay in. It spreads so easily that I don't think my ostomy actually increases my chances of getting it that much and its not worth staying in for. I prefer to live my life to the fullest and if I am going to get it anyway just like the flue then I am not going to hide for years.

So this year I was able to enjoy my vacation to the fullest with my family. We spend several days on the beach and relaxing in the sun. Now with an ostomy I do bring some extra gear for an emergency and I like to make sure all is waterproofed and most of all sand proofed. Nothing is worse than sand getting on my skin and hurting me in tender areas around my stoma. I usually wear a stoma cap at the beach to be less conspicuous and just feel more free. But I do keep a waterproof bag and also my gear inside of a ziplock bag inside of that. It is double protection and I am a big fan of staying safe and not ruining my stuff.
So I do suggest people with a stoma double bag everything going to the beach and bring lots of water to make sure sand is off of everything before you touch it. And also bring sterilizing spray or gell as well. Being clean and safe is important and also bring some moisturizer along too. This all goes after sun screan though. A sunburn on your stoma can be the worst thing possible. So make sure that does not happen. Be safe and enjoy your vacation, I know I sure did.
